Nick Adlington - Psychotherapy & Counselling in Brentford, West London

Welcome

I am a trained, experienced and UKCP registered psychotherapist who can help you manage and transform the effects of trauma on your mind, body, and spirit. I work particularly well with those who may be struggling with feelings of isolation, loneliness, fear, high anxiety, and who may be seeking a sense of stability and belonging in the world. I am trained and experienced in the treatment of trauma and bring this lens to the work.

I work with clients in-person and online from: Acton, Barnes, Brentford, Chiswick, Ealing, Hammersmith, Hounslow, Isleworth, Kew, Putney, Richmond, Twickenham and across London.

Trauma Focussed Work

Traumatic life experiences can leave us feeling isolated, alone, fearful and quick to react in situations which remind us of the original trauma and where we may feel unsafe. I believe that the results of traumatic experiences cannot and are not “got rid of”. Instead, I have found that the human condition is one where we can learn from this previous experience and even find wonderful new qualities in ourselves as we come to terms with the hurt and pain of the original experience. Rather than getting rid-of, we can integrate these difficult experiences and come out stronger.

“All human beings engage in a certain amount of “seeming” in order to survive psychologically, yet deep inside the person, the soul cries out for recognition; recognition that this unique person exists, wanting acknowledgement as a separate individual - yet also as a fellow human being.”

—Richard Hycner

The Work Together

We will work together so that you can find support from both within yourself as well as from the environment you live in. I may encourage you to experiment with new ways of being in the world, changing old habits that are keeping you stuck. The work will be a conversation between you and I. I may share my own thoughts or feelings where I believe that could be helpful. I will encourage you to be curious about your experience and where possible to notice any thoughts and feelings that can help build increased personal awareness, resilience, and agency. I will enquire into your relationship with the wider world and am likely to ask you about your connection to family, friends, land, the environment. I will support you to develop insights into your sense of self and identity.

Moving Forward

I will ask that we meet regularly for an introductory period. During this initial phase we will be reviewing and discussing progress. You are not tied-in to a fixed contract and can finish at any time, though I ask that we have a minimum of two sessions to finish any work that we have begun and if we have worked for a longer period, as many as four sessions to finish.

To do the work to the best outcome it is necessary for you and I to understand whether I’m the right person for you, and to then build a sense of trust, confidence and safety. However, previous traumatic experiences can often make it harder to build such trusting connections and we may have previously relied heavily upon ourselves to get through. Therefore, working with the effects of traumatic experience tends to be longer term ongoing work. However, if you are interested in shorter term work then we will focus more tightly on a more immediate outcome or goal and explore that in the time we have.

“The therapeutic relationship in Gestalt therapy is not clear cut and simple to describe. However, there does seem to be widespread agreement on the characteristics of the relationship. In keeping with existential values, these include a non-hierarchical relationship and an emphasis on full and genuine engagement between client and therapist”

— Lynne Jacobs
